What is the Speaker's Corner?
In London, England, the Speaker's Corner is the northeast corner of Hyde Park, where for centuries any person has been able to stand up and speak publicly about almost anything. At Holy Innocents', the Speakers Corner is a public speaking club based on the same idea. As members of the Speaker's Corner, not only will we learn and practice all the tricks of the rhetorical trade, we'll have a lot of fun. We'll watch and learn from the greatest speeches of all time. We'll break down the techniques and tricks that made them great, and try delivering some of those speeches, ourselves. We'll write and deliver prepared speeches on topics of our own choosing. We'll pick themes on which to speak. We'll try improvisational speeches. We'll give each other positive feedback. And in the process, we'll have fun becoming effective public speakers.
Why join the Speaker's Corner?
The ability to deliver an engaging, convincing, persuasive, entertaining speech will prove to be one of the most valuable skills you will ever possess. Personal occasions, business events, political and community occasions, the list is endless. And when you become known as a popular, effective speaker, opportunities will begin to seek you out. As a member of the Speaker's Corner, you will prepare yourself for those opportunities. And have a lot of fun doing it.
What are Speaker's Corner meetings like?
About every other week we will meet to watch a few of the great speeches of all time. We'll talk about them and break them down, identifying their most effective parts. Then we'll practice delivering speeches. We'll deliver prepared speeches on given topics. We'll have improvisational speeches. We'll deliver speeches on a theme. We'll practice actual speeches that members need to deliver in real life, helping prepare them. And we'll experiment with crazy, controversial, and bizarre new speaking techniques and themes. Just for fun. We will also provide each other positive, constructive feedback in a fun, friendly environment.
Two School Events
Twice a year we'll hold a Speaker's Corner event in a prominent location around campus. These events and speeches will be promoted and designed around a theme guaranteed to bring out your peers to watch.
